The Splintered View:A Visualization of Dichotomies in Tang Ritual Texts

Chao-Hui Jenny Liu(Department of Art History,New York University)

Historically, most Chinese funerary rituals took place above ground—in the house of the dead,on the way to the tomb, and above ground at the tomb.Because of this, ritual texts had less to say explicitly about the tomb itself below ground.Nevertheless, this paper proposes that dualistic concepts of form/spirit,auspicious/inauspicious can be drawn from details of Chinese ritual, particularly during the Tang dynasty. The interplay of these dual concepts shows the structure, set up by ritual, which gradually transforms the dead to ancestor and revered spirit. The transformation of identities,as brilliantly delineated by Van Gennep's general theory of“the rites of passage,”[1]involves a journey. The Tang story centers around the journey from domestic space(commonly rendered as nei内)to public space(commonly rendered as wai外)and back again,a circular journey which neverless transforms the deceased in its identity from corpse to ancestor.

For my primary documents,I will use the Yuanling?yizhu and the Kaiyuanli.[2]The Yuanling?yizhu元陵仪注“Yuanling Ritual Directives”(779)specifically deals with the death and burial of the Tang emperor Daizong(r.763-79).The Kaiyuanli(732),on the other hand deals with the burial rituals of officials, grade seven and above;this paper only deals with the sections on officials of the third grade and above. Both documents form the basis for this discussion.

Xiong/ji,xing/shen,tomb/temple dichotomies

“Rites are strictest in dealing with auspicious and inauspicious occasions, making certain that they do not impinge upon each other.”[1](礼者,谨于吉凶不相厌者也。)[2]Ritual concepts of the Confucius school of thought as articulated by Xunzi[3]are of limited use in looking at funerary art;however, dichotomies, such as auspicious vs.inauspicious, form vs.spirit, and tomb vs.temple, were also commonly used.Funeral rites were usually characterized by the Chinese as“inauspicious(xiong凶).”In fact there were auspicious ji吉objects and processions. In a funeral context, things of the ji are things used by the deceased in their former life.

One important theme in the ritual which affects the iconographic programme is the idea of duality between the spirit and the form.[4]This concept provides a persuasive reason why there are two visions that are evident in the tombs, with the differentiation of ji吉(auspicious)and xiong凶(inauspicious)spheres of a funeral. There is a succinct discussion of this in Zhang Zhangtai's dissertation.[5]One vision is a selective version of the past life of the occupant;the other is a version of the burial. Thus, the western wall of the sloping tomb path is often occupied by the xiong procession, with the ox chariot that perhaps contained the body.

This bifurcation of vision begins in the beginning of the journey, with the corpse/coffin lying in state at the palace to the west and the spirit tablet to the east. The ritual instructions for the Yuanling call for the setting up of two enclosures:one is the auspicious ji?wo吉幄;the other is the inauspicious tent(suwo素幄,literally plain tent).Essentially, the deceased's body defines the inauspicious component and the spirit tablet defines the auspicious component of the funerary ritual. As both move further away from the residence, like materials are gathered. The coffin accrues things like funerary figurines while the spirit tablet are presented with human retinues from the time of the deceased's life time. When each component is gathered into a funeral procession to leave the residence to the tomb, they form one line. The spirit tablet heads the auspicious part of the procession in front while the corpse/coffin serves as the center of the inauspicious part in the back of the procession.Once at the tomb, the inauspicious and auspicious break from the procession to go to the west and east sides, once more echoing the configuration at the residence. The bifurcated vision ends only at the tomb when the contents of the inauspicious procession are placed there.

The inauspicious procession ends when the body goes into the tomb. The auspicious part of the procession never goes into the tomb, but remains outside the mausoleum gates in tents, receiving sacrifices, until it is time to go back to the city,to the ancestral temple, where the tablet is placed in the ancestral temple, and“reincorporation”takes place. Thus, the following section lays out Tang ritual codes,as they manifest the ritual concepts above.

Tang ritual codes:Yuanlingyizhu and the Kaiyuanli

Throughout the seventh century and until the beginning of the eighth, the Tang court lacked a concrete, unified ritual code.Ritual codes for imperial family rituals, especially, were not laid out in clear terms. There were two attempts before the universally accepted Kaiyuanli开元礼.The first, the Zhenguanli贞观礼,[1]was presented to the throne in 138 sections divided into 100 chapters(Wechsler assumes that it was basically the same as the Sui code, which was based upon the ritual codes of the Southern Liang and Northern Qi rather than the archaic Zhouli),[2]released and promulgated in the first month of 633.Its chief compilers were Fang Xuanling玄龄and Wei Zheng魏徵.There were complaints, however, that the texts were not complete enough.

A new ritual code, the Xianqingli显庆礼,compiled in 130 chapters by a consortium of scholars, was presented to the throne in 658,and was officially in use until 676.At the time of presentation,Xu Jingzong徐敬宗and Li Yifu李义府cut out the Xianqingli's chapter(“guo?xu国恤”)?on the rites for the emperor's mausoleum.[3]After its official release,it was judged to be inferior to the Zhenguanli.Though it was markedly different from the Zhenguanli, both codes continued to serve,in parts, ritual events. The following situation was common:

...the ritual officials were not better off with following standard regulations.Every time there were ritual celebrations, they would all study past and present ritual texts on the spot, and select those appropriate. Thus,Zhenguanli and Xianqingli were both used simultaneously during this period and neither was made obsolete.
